I’ve got just one staff member- do I really need a Contract?

On 6th April 2020 the Law changed: a new entitlement, from day one, to a written statement of main terms and conditions for both workers and employees came into force. In effect it placed both categories of ‘employees’ and ‘workers’ under the same umbrella.

A ‘statement of main terms and conditions’ effectively means a Contract. A Contract means clarity – and clarity means a better relationship between you and your workforce- however large or small that is.

In our last blog I wrote about company culture, and how a Staff Handbook can transform your business helping employees understand your vision and the culture you want to create.

A Contract – even for just one employee or worker- crystallises this for both you and your employee. And, from 6th April 2020, it has also become legally essential.

Many questions arise as soon as small business owners start to think about Contracts.

For example, what should go into the Contract? How do I make the Contract effective? Where can I find the time or knowledge to create a Contract? I like the freedom of working with small numbers of people without a Contract, what’s in it for me?

Well, first of all you have no choice. The Law states clearly that your employee or worker is now entitled to a Contract.

But equally as important is the protection a well-designed Contract gives you– the small business owner. All you need to do is to create the right Contract for your business.
